US distribution of mystery product ZYN nt Tobacco-free Nicotine Pouches expands

Swedish Match North America (SMNA) is dramatically expanding the availability of ZYN nt tobacco-free nicotine pouch products into the western United States.  Three questions come immediately to mind:  1) What the hell is ZYN, 2) If ZYN is tobacco-free but has nicotine, why is Swedish Match making it? and 3)  As a Swedish Match snus user, why should I be interested in ZYN nt?

Fortunately, I am now in position to answer those questions and more.....

ZYN nt Displays; 3mg nicotine and 6mg nicotine(updated 30 Jun 16)  My Monday Swedish Snus Ambassador Diplomatic Pouch contained a box from SMNA.  Inside were two attractive ZYN nt display boxes as pictured here.  One contained the six ZYN nt 3mg nicotine products; the other the six ZYN nt 6 mg nicotine products.

As pictured in the left display box, I also received a large but stylish USB drive with "ZYN" carved into it.

When I plugged the drive into my PC, it began glowing red which was a bit unsettling.  Fortunately, my anti-malware software quickly confirmed I had not been phished by anti-all-tobacco extremists pretending to be Swedish Match.  On the flash drive was everything I could want to know about ZYN nt...almost.

What is ZYN nt?

ZYN nt (the nt stands for "no tobacco") are a pouch product similar to Swedish snus in that the pouch goes under your upper lip, is very discreet, it's spitless, and contains nicotine.

Swedish Match launched ZYN nt in Colorado and Montana back in 2014.  Sales were strong enough to now expand distribution to the entire United States west of Texas.

Two strengths are available; 3mg which is said to be equivalent to a regular Swedish Match snus portion and 6mg which is designed as a strong snus equivalent.

In appearance, the ZNT pouches look like a dry white portion snus.  ZYN nt comes currently comes in six flavors, Coffee, Cinnamon, Cool Mint, Spearmint, Wintergreen, and Peppermint.

I suppose Swedish Match could have created a tobacco flavored version except it probably would have confused the whole "tobacco-free" message.  If you want tobacco flavored reduced harm oral pouch products with nicotine over the counter in the US, just buy General Snus.

ZYN's non-woven pouches contain flavoring, non-tobacco filler, nicotine salts, and pH balancers (to enhance the nicotine experience).  The nicotine used is derived from tobacco leaves yet ZYN is tobacco free.  How is that possible?

The nicotine is essentially soaked out of the tobacco leaves in high pH water, then filtered to remove any other tobacco elements leaving pure nicotine salts.  Tobacco leaves may have been killed to make ZYN's nicotine, but there are no tobacco leaves in ZYN.

Each can contains 15 portions weighing roughly 0.4mg each.  The pouch weight may be reminiscent of mini portion snus but the pouches themselves are larger and don't feel like mini portions under the lip.  The filler quickly flattens out and molds itself to the gum making ZYN so discreet you can easily forget you have a pouch in, save for the flavor.

I hesitate to quantify the nicotine experience with ZYN.  Matt Campbell from SnusTV.com said he had to use two ZYN portions at once to really feel the nicotine.

My initial experience was different and possibly unique, especially with the 6mg nicotine products.  I felt the nicotine fairly quickly to the point of an uncomfortable tightness in my chest.  After receiving no similiar complaints from others, I started my ZYNnt testing over again today with very different results.

As before, I've been alternating ZYN with various strengths and types of Swedish snus.  I felt no discomfort this time.  The 3mg portions held off nic cravings but I found myself cycling through pouches quicker than the 40 minutes to an hour intended use time.

The 6mg pouches were better but I found snus of similar strength more satisfying overall.  While the taste of ZYNnt is not bad at all, the sweetness and lack of tobacco flavor became too cloying for my liking eventually.

Moving on, ZYN nt cans are the same size as most of today's Swedish Match portion snuses.  I could not find a catch lid but can lids are child-resistant.  You have to line up a top and bottom arrow in order for the cans to open.

I wish I'd read that part of the documentation first as I almost broke a nail trying to get the lid off the first can of ZYN I tried.

ZYN nt can graphics top and bottomThe top lid is split between the product name/description and the insanely long fine-print disclaimer “This product contains nicotine, a substance known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm. Nicotine is addictive. Physical effects include increased heart rate and raised blood pressure. Intended for use by adult tobacco users and not minors, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or persons with or at risk of heart disease, high blood pressure or diabetes. Keep out of reach of children. Use as directed.”

Wow, and I thought the FDA smokeless tobacco warnings were extreme!  Actually three of the four FDA warnings are extremely inaccurate but at least they are succinct.  I suspect that ZYN being now sold in the People's Republic of California has a lot to do with the voluminous ZYN health disclaimer.

The flavorings themselves are tasty and on the sweet side.  I wish Swedish Match would apply the coffee and cinnamon recipes to traditional snus.  Mixed with the tobacco flavor, they would probably be quite good.

You will not get any tobacco flavor at all out of ZYN nt.  The flavor is more in line with nicotine gum except it's better and you don't have to chew it.

Why would Swedish Match market a tobacco-free nicotine product?

Before I even opened the package, my question was why?  Why would the largest Swedish snus manufacturer with a tobacco product history going back centuries make a non-tobacco product which could compete with snus?

In reading through the ZYN documentation on the USB drive, the positives for ZYN largely matched the positives of Swedish snus.

Like snus, ZYN is spitless, discreet, convenient, and unlike other tobacco products except snus, easy to use in tobacco-free zones; especially airplanes (not that I am condoning that behavior....).  It took a little digging to ferret out other positives not shared with snus.

ZYN nt is not temperature sensitive; no need to refrigerate or even store at a cool, constant temperature.  Nicotine salts are also more stable than pharmaceutical or other types of liquid nicotine and not vulnerable to oxidation.  Unopened, each can will remain fresh for one year.  Once opened, Swedish Match recommends you finish the can within 30 days.

Since ZYN is officially tobacco free, unless someone comes up with a "No Nicotine" sign, you are free to use it anywhere and everywhere.

Maybe that's why Swedish Match created ZYN in the first place.  Unlike Sweden, snus was not a part of our cultural history. "Smokeless tobacco" has negative connotations in large parts of the US.  Most Americans still immediately think of chewing tobacco or dip with the spitting and mess; not snus.

SMNA and American snus bloggers have been fighting this perception since 2007 and it's still an ongoing informational challenge.

With the current torrent of anti-all-tobacco hysteria over vapor and ecigs, offering a nicotine product without tobacco may seem like an easier sell to American nicotine addicts seeking a discreet way to support their addiction.

Based on the two state ZYN trial being a big enough success to warrant expanding the market to half the country, it certainly makes sense to Swedish Match.  Sales at Smoker Friendly stores alone would make ZYN worth pursuing, according to a SnusCIA source in Colorado.

Will I use ZYN nt personally?

This is the most important question of all, especially to me.

I'm a snuser.  I've been a Swedish snus user since 2007 when it finally allowed me to quit my life-long cigarette habit.

I love Swedish snus and the taste of tobacco; either alone or with flavoring agents added.  I love how it satisfies my nicotine addiction with so little risk.

ZYN is flavored nicotine in a food-quality base containing absolutely no tobacco or tobacco flavor.

I may pop a ZYN-nt occasionally before bed as I wind down.  I don't see myself mixing ZYN into my daily rotation of snuses or switching completely to ZYN.  Even if the nicotine experience was stronger, this is a product and a product category I really have no interest in.

That doesn't mean ZYN is a bad alternative to snus for smokers looking to quit or cut back on cigarettes.  ZYNnt may be a great alternative for vape fans in places where vaping is not allowed; especially if they prefer fruit or mint flavored nic juice.

If ZYN nt can help anyone struggling with nicotine addiction by providing a near-harmless nicotine alternative (yes, I read the warning label on the can), then I'm all for it.

ZYN or any other product from any manufacturer in that category, is just not for me.  I'm a Swedish Snus lover.  Swedish snus saved my life.  Snus is my tobacco and nicotine source of choice.  It always will be.

New Swedish Strategy for Ending the EU Snus Ban

$

0

In Q2 2016 the Swedish government took two major actions concerning Swedish snus.  At the time, the first seemed unnecessary and the second only confirmed the weakness of Stockholm when it came to their own free trade interests between Sweden and the EU.

On 1 July 2016 a third snus action was taken, this time not by the Swedish government but by Swedish snus manufacturing giant Swedish Match AB.  Looking at all three actions together begs the question: were these coordinated actions by Sweden and Swedish Match to finally eliminate the EU ban on Swedish snus or just an odd coincidence?

The Safety of Swedish Snus

The Swedish National Food Agency, Sweden's version of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has been responsible for regulating Swedish snus as a food product since 1971.  This is important since now considered a food product, Swedish snus manufacturers were forced to adopt the same manufacturing and ingredients quality by which food products were required to achieve.

This led to Swedish snus becoming the least harmful form of oral tobacco in existence.  Today, Swedish snus is considered to be 99% less harmful to a smoker than cigarettes are.

It therefore came as somewhat of a shock to me that on 11 Apr the National Food Agency enacted new tougher food product regulations for undesirable substances in Swedish snus.

My first reaction was to ask why?  Wasn't Swedish snus safe enough as it is?  Was this just another attempt by government bureaucrats to justify their budgets?  After the third snus action occurred in July 2016, I went back and read the April article again and was struck by two paragraphs:

While the previous regulation governing snus/chewing tobacco (LIVSFS 2012:6) only regulated two undesirable substances, namely lead and aflatoxins, the new version also regulates the sum of the TSNA/tobacco-specific nitrosamines (NNN and NNK), and B(a)P.

The National Food Agency has adopted the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended limit values for the sum of NNN and NNK, while the limit values adopted by the National Food Agency for B(a)P are even stricter than those recommended by WHO.

Swedish snus now meets and even exceeded WHO recommended limits for smokeless tobacco and snus.

Sweden Surrenders to new EU-mandated Snus Warning Labels

A little over a month later, the EU's latest Tobacco Products Directive was implemented in Swedish legislation, which among other things means new health warnings on snus cans.  I was outraged at the time.  Sweden is the only EU member state which has an exception allowing the sale of Swedish snus.

By adopting the new EU TPD into Swedish law, Sweden was in fact allowing the EU to write domestic Swedish laws which only affected Sweden!  At the time I was outraged (as I usually am) by the timidity of the Swedish government when it comes to protecting their own best interests.

Again, after 1 July 2016 I read the warning label article again with a different eye and began wondering if the National Food Agency and Swedish Parliament actions were not part of a bigger plan.

See you in Court: Swedish Match files action to end the EU Swedish Snus Ban!

Ban the EU Snus Ban!This brings us to 1 July 2016; the day Swedish Match AB filed a claim calling on a British court to ask the European Court of Justice (ECJ) to "revisit" the legal grounds of the Swedish snus ban.

"We are asking the UK court to make a reference to the European Court of Justice on the validity of article 17 in the Tobacco Products Directive," Swedish Match said in an email to Reuters.

Swedish Match said the legal circumstances for the original ban had changed because "novel tobacco products and e-cigarettes" were allowed in TPD-2.

According to Patrik Hildingsson, Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs at Swedish Match AB, "The novelty of snus has been one of the main arguments for not allowing snus on the internal market. That circumstance has now changed,".  Should the British court refer the case to the ECJ, Swedish Match expects a ruling mid-2018 at the earliest, Hildingsson said.

Why file the claim in a British court instead of one in Sweden, you may wonder.  In another masterstroke of Sweden's negotiating skills with the EU, it seems the procedure to make a reference to the ECJ was available to courts in some EU member states.... but not in Sweden.

Another important reason is the reputation and standing of the British courts, according to Solicitor and SnusCENTRAL Contributor Adam Skelland.

In remarks on Snus Nation, Skelland explained that "The UK's legal system is the de facto choice in international arbitration and litigation. We are the best lawyers in the world which is why so many commercial contracts and agreements have UK arbitration and litigation clauses in them.

Our legal system is totally separate from politics, judges aren't chosen by politicians and are totally independent, which is in stark contrast to a lot of places. Also UK judges don't like being told what to do by the EU and ECJ so I think that may have a huge impact on (the Swedish Match claim) since our courts will listen to science and reason. Most other EU courts would just tow the EU line."

With Brexit pushed back as of now to 2019 at the earliest, the decision of the UK court will still have the same standing as any other EU nation in reference to the ECJ.

Coordinated snus ban attack or coincidence?

Did Swedish Match and the Swedish government coordinate their efforts to give the Swedish Match court claim the best possible case?

With the strictest controls of any smokeless tobacco product already sold in the EU, a stronger warning message, and EU TPD-defined warning labels in place, it will be considerably more difficult for anti-Swedish and anti-Swedish-snus extremists to divert the subject from the validity of Article 17 defining snus as a "novelty product".

Patrik Hildingsson would know and I would have called him weeks ago for confirmation (or not) of my theory that all this is no coincidence;  that is I would have except Patrick and his lovely family are away on holiday camping and doing other fun holiday things.  Most of Sweden is on holiday now in fact.

Until his return, I can state confidently that these three anti-snus ban activities were coordinated at the highest levels.  I will also take back some of my negative comments concerning the lack of competency of Swedish diplomats....unless Patrick shoots down my theory.

In that event, I will either assume this public/private coordination is so sensitive that he has to deny it or that I read too much into things like this.

The important take-away is no matter how all this came to be, we could very well see the end of the odious EU Snus Ban by 2020!  Better two decades late then not at all.

Rejoice EU snusers and smokers soon to be snusers!  Your suffering may soon be over.

A Letter about Swedish Snus you will NEVER see from Big Tobacco

$

You will never see published a letter from a cigarette smoker thanking Altria or Reynolds American for addicting them to nicotine through cigarettes.  Likewise, a short note saying "I'm a life-long smoker.  So happy today to learn I have lung cancer!" is even more unlikely.

In the case of nicotine-addicts now cigarette-free because of Swedish snus, thank you letters and testimonials are more the rule than the exception.....

Meet Lyn Patterson; former smoker and current Swedish snus user

We received the following message on the SnusCENTRAL Facebook page last week from Lyn Patterson of Tennessee USA:

I am nearly in tears as I write this. I have smoked since I was 15. (I am nearly 44). Not just a casual smoker either. I was a hard hitter, smoking up to 2-3 packs of camel non-filters, at one point. I have tried EVERYTHING to quit. I took ONE General white Swedish snus portion and I have quit.

I discovered Jakobssons mint strong today as I was still craving those nic spikes. I will NEVER smoke again. My mother died at 60 related to side effects heart disease medications. I don't want that and was sure I was doomed the same fate. Also, I am a feminine female that works in the beauty industry, so I would have never "dipped".  No one guesses I am snusing! Please feel free to share this testimonial. Your education about snus could save lives.

Before sharing Lyn's story, I wanted to ask her a few more questions on how she came to discover Swedish snus and what convinced her to make the switch.

Meet Lyn Patterson; FORMER Smoker and CURRENT Swedish Snus user!In particular, I was curious in 2016 what made her think snus would be a good way to stop smoking, where she bought your first can of General White Portion snus (US store or internet), and did the current inaccurate FDA-required warning labels on the can bother or hinder her at all from making that purchase?

"I researched snus through you guys at SnusCENTRAL.org and various other safety & health information sites on the internet", Lyn replied.

We can all thank a Shell gas station by the Walmart in Manchester, TN for being a General Snus dealer and introducing Lyn to General White Portion. " I was so pleased with it I bought 2 more cans and now my husband is converting."

Kudos to Mike Dean, General Snus Brand Manager and Swedish Match North America for General Snus's growing presense in the US over-the-counter market.

Lyn continued "We plan on ordering from the SnusCentral.com Snus Shop to try more flavors although we are still perplexed as to which to try first".

This is a common yet wonderful problem, Lyn.  While General Snus only sells 8 products over the counter with Jakobsson's and Thunder adding a few more options in more limited US areas, over 200 Scandinavian snuses are available from reputable internet stores shipping from Sweden worldwide (where legal)!

FDA and the General Snus MRTP Application

I was most curious about the effect (or lack thereof) the current generic smokeless tobacco warning labels FDA requires on cans of Swedish snus sold in or into the US.

In 2014, Swedish Match North America submitted a Modified Risk Tobacco Product (MRTP) application to FDA petitioning that three of the four warning labels currently used on General Snus be modified to accurately reflect the products; not simply to parrot the warnings on more harmful tobacco products.

By law, FDA was supposed to have ruled on the General Snus MRTP Application in August of 2015.

Now 14 months past that date, the 125,000+ page initial MRTP application, two 30 day public comment periods, review and testimony before the Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee (TPSAC), and additional document requests by FDA to Swedish Match, and false hopes, FDA has responded.....with silence.

I've reached out to FDA over the past year concerning the MRTPA.  The response always boils down to "pending".  No matter how many different ways I phrase the question, the answer is always "pending" and not a word more.

My concern is and has always been what reaction an inaccurate warning label stating "This product causes cancer" would have on a cigarette smoker considering switching to snus?  Would they say, "well then, why bother switching" thus endangering their health under false pretenses?

Lyn's answer surprised me but maybe that's because she had educated herself on the product before picking up a can.

"The label didn't bother me AT ALL. The fact that they were willing to divulge the ingredients was impressive to me and many of the ladies I work with were also shocked to see such transparency about the contents. I mean, you don't see that on American manufacturing right?!?"

Swedish Snus:  the most discreet nicotine-rich solution to quit smoking

Like Lyn, I smoked most of my life.  Like Lyn, I tried quitting many times but never was able to overcome the nicotine monkey on my back.

Like Lyn, I discovered Swedish snus through the internet, although it was a lot harder back then.  A local tobacco store (now closed) sold me my first can of General Original Portion snus and I've been cigarette-free since 2007.

Like Lyn, heart disease runs in my family.  Unlike Lyn, I'll be 59 years old in January.  I'm firmly convinced if I hadn't stumbled across Swedish snus 9 years ago, I wouldn't be here today.

That's why I created SnusCENTRAL.org all those years ago...to provide a central location of factual information, discussion, commentary, reviews, and all the rest extolling the salvation Swedish snus brings to nicotine-addicted smokers, especially in the USA where snus is still largely unknown.

Today, there are others out there now doing the same thing and the Swedish snus community has grown exponentially....shout out to Chad Jones and Snubie.com

It's very time consuming for all of us with little reward.  That's why testimonials like Lyn's are so important to us in the anti-cigarette/pro-snus movement.  People like Lyn make all our efforts worthwhile...saving one nicotine addict at a time from an unnecessary and painful death which cigarettes ultimately deliver.

Swedish Snus:  spitless, completely discreet, can be used anywhere unnoticed, and about as safe as French Roast coffee.  It's a nicotine dream come true.

Enjoy your REAL Swedish Snus and your health!

What is up with Oden's Snus and GN Tobacco?

$
0
0

The origins of what became GN Tobacco are somewhat murky.  What was always clear is that the initial Oden's Snus marketing plan hinged on offering the snus with the highest nicotine levels available on the market.  Everything else was secondary.

Fast-forwarding to 2016 and GNT's Q3 new product introductions, a trend had solidified into a huge change from 2009......

What's up at GNT?  Taste and quality.

Oden's Snus and the rest of the GNT Brands

The majority of GN Tobacco' products are value snuses.  Value snus is less expensive than the premium brands and designed for cost-conscious snusers.

This is generally achieved by lowering the amount of snus per can to lower the weight-based taxation costs at both the manufacturer and consumer levels, using less-expensive tobacco and other ingredients, or a combination of both.

There is nothing inherently wrong with value brand snus.  Taste is in the mouth of the snuser and their snus budget is based on their wallet.  Finding snus you like at a price you can afford is a good thing.

There are a couple of value snuses I mix it up with; Kaliber Extra Tobakssmak by Swedish Match for example.  I usually throw a can or two in each order for variety.  I primarily use premium snuses; at least until now.

Value Snus or Premium Snus? You decide.

Snapshot Snus Reviews

GNT released a lot of new snuses for different markets in 2016.  I'm only going to focus on these six to keep it simple and short.

I didn't have any great expectations when I opened my first can of Odens Lemon White Portion snus.  Most lemon flavored value snuses I have tried over my 9 years of snusing have been one dimensional, candy-like, and/or overly artificially sweetened.

Not so at all with Odens Lemon White.  The tobacco flavor which is rich with a touch of pepper is prevalent when you first put in the portion with the lemon in the background.

As time progresses, the lemon moves more to the fore and it's a wonderful real lemon taste!  Not overly sweet, the lemon flavor is citrus-sour, as Matt Campbell of SnusTV.com called it in his must-watch video review of Oden's Lemon White Portion.

Many premium fruit and berry flavored snuses I liked have fallen away over the years or changed so much they have become occasional snuses for me.

Oden's Lemon White Portion is the first value snus to move into my regular rotation and the first I will be buying by the roll.  Who would have thought?

Lenny's Stark White Portion Snus will also be moving into my regular rotation.  When I first read the product description, the word "oregano" jumped out at me.  Oregano?  Is that a code word for vegetative flavors?  They have been common in value snus over the years and not are not a positive.

Instead, "oregano" meant oregano in this beautifully done and unique snus.  Lenny's Stark White begins with traditional flavor with nice peppery notes and great tobacco taste and a subdued bergamot....then comes the oregano.  It stands out on it's own but doesn't overpower the other flavors.

To my surprise, the oregano was a perfect complement to the flavor profile.  It stays throughout the entire live of the portion.  As a stark or strong snus, the 1.5% nicotine level would normally indicate and Extra Strong nicotine strength, but I think the decision to call this Lenny's a Stark portion is more in keeping with the nicotine hit.

Änglaholm White Portion Snus, named after the Swedish town of Anglaholm for unknown reasons, is a real snus treat.

The style reminds me of the now-departed Roda Lacket White Portion but with Cornel berries as the fruit flavoring.  Cornel berries have a sweet/sour cherry-like taste.    It is nicely balanced and not overpowering cherry at all.  The flavor is there but is tempered and melded with the tobacco and a dried fruit flavor which caresses the pallet without being overwhelming.

On paper, this is a strong portion snus at 1.2% nicotine but it hits me like a 0.8mg nicotine snus in practice.

Änglaholm White Portion Snus has now entered my fruit and berry flavored snus rotation.

Odens No.3 White Portion Snus is a lighter traditional Swedish snus. The citrus notes are strongest in the beginning but the longer the No3 white portion is in your mouth, takes a step back allowing the tobacco and pepper notes to fully develop.

There is no burn with this 0.9% nicotine regular strength snus so it's good when your gums need a break. I use it as an occasional change-up snus but for snus users on a budget, Odens No.3 White Portion Snus is a great value.

When I first opened a can of Odens Mint White Portion Snus, I was greeted by the aroma of menthol.  I don't like menthol.  When I smoked, I hated menthol cigarettes.

When I reluctantly popped in a portion, I realized I wasn't really tasting menthol but a very pleasant yet different mint snus.  GNT uses mint crystals and a touch of Xylitol for sweetness in Odens Mint White.  If you are a mint snus fan, it's worth trying a can.  For the price, you can't go wrong.

Siberia Brown Power Portion Snus is a tip of the hat to the original GNT mission before they were called GNT:  offer the highest nicotine snus on the market.  Siberia Brown Can is the new record holder at 4.3% nicotine!

I have a can in my chiller marked "Break Seal in case of Nicotine Emergency".

Great Tasting, Low Price Swedish Snus; so what's the catch?

Nothing in life is free.  How can GNT make such great tasting budget snuses at such low prices?  As mentioned earlier, one method of lowering a snuses price is to include less of it in the can.

Ten years ago, every can of portion snus by every manufacturer contained 24 one gram portions for a total snus weight of 24 grams.  Money-hungry governments preying on the nicotine addicted have added tax after tax to smokeless tobacco worldwide, especially weight-based taxes.

Except for special editions, 24 one gram portion cans are non-existent.  Even one gram portions are almost impossible to find, save Jakobsson's Snus, but there are only 20 portions now.

GNT chose to lower the weight by both reducing the amount of snus and the number of portions.  These means the portions appear nice and full, but there are fewer portions in the can.  Depending on the snus in question, 13 to 17 portions per can.  You can find the number of portions for each snus in their product descriptions.

You are getting less portions per can by a few than with some other snuses, but with price per can so low, you can practically buy two cans for the price of one can of super premium snus.

What impressed me enough to write about these snuses is that the significant step up in quality not only is evident in these value brands, but also extends to GN Tobacco's premium brands like Islay Whisky Snus and Byron's.

GNT has come a long way.  With more new releases like the long-anticipated La Morenita Zapaca Rum Premium Snus coming this quarter, my taste-buds are quivering...and yours should be too!

Swedish Match to Delist XRANGE Grov and Salmiac Slim Portion Snus

$

According to an inside source at Swedish Match speaking on condition of anonymity, Swedish Match will be discontinuing two snuses in their popular XRANGE brand:  XRANGE Grov Slim Portion Snus and XRANGE Salmiac Slim Portion Snus....

The reason can be assumed to be lower than projected sales of these two flavors.

This announcement comes as a particular blow to me personally as XRANGE Grov and Salmiac are personal favorites; especially the XRANGE Grov Slim Portion snus.  It was my go-to snus when I needed a break from bergamot.

The XRANGE Snus Brand was a great idea

Launched in 2015, XRANGE was designed to provide Premium quality snus at a retail price not much higher than value snuses but less than their premium brand snus inspirations.  The target market were snus users in Sweden of higher priced value snuses who wanted a step up in quality and for premium snusers looking for a value.

XRANGE Grov Slim Portion and XRANGE General Salmiac Slim Portion snus were added to the XRANGE line in early 2016.  There are currently nine XRANGE Snuses (soon to seven) offerings in the XRANGE brand.  No mention was made of any new additions coming to the XRANGE brand, at least this year.

Rest in Peace, XRANGE Grov and Salmiac snus. We hardly knew you.XRANGE Grov has been in my rotation since it was released.  I like the slim portions used in the XRANGE products and preferred it to Grov Original Portion Snus which uses a full sized portion.

Swedish Match has struggled to market a successful licorice or salmiac snus offering.  Prior to today's announcement, the venerable General Licorice Portion snus was the most recent of their licorice snuses to be discontinued.

The best licorice snus Swedish Match ever made in the opinion of many was Nick and Johnny Small Batch Licorice.  This was a limited edition snus everyone hoped would be kept as a production snus but wasn't.

My dream would be that Nick and Johnny Small Batch Licorice comes back as an XRANGE offering if Swedish Match can keep the flavor the same.

Only Catch Large White Licorice Portion and Catch Dry Licorice Mini Portion snus remain as current licorice offerings in the Swedish Match catalog.

Time to start hoarding XRANGE Grov and Salmiac snus!

If either of these snuses are favorites of yours, it's time to start loading up the freezer.  I'll be adding a new section to my freezer for XRANGE Grov Slim Portion Snus in particular.  Hopefully Swedish Match will surprise me with a great new licorice or salmiac snus in the near future.

Swedish Match MRTPA denial shows FDA approval process is a Farce

After 2 and a half years of fumbling the Swedish Match application for Modified Risk Tobacco Product (MRTP) status on their General Snus products sold in US convenience stores, the FDA announced on Dec 14th they had taken "action".

After a careful review of the entire MRTPA process concerning General Snus and FDA's eventual ruling, a fair-minded person can only conclude that NO tobacco product will ever win MRTP status, regardless of the merits, from this FDA Center for Tobacco Products.

This begs the question, Congressional mandate notwithstanding, why does FDA perpetuate this cruel, expensive, and time consuming farce?  Simply make the MRTPA process a one page form, hold the required public comment period, and then deny the application.  That would save both the government and the manufacturer huge amounts of money while delivering the same outcome as the current process...minus the hypocrisy.

To refresh the memories of those who lost track of the process, here's a quick timeline:

  • In June of 2014, Swedish Match NA submitted an MRTP Application for the eight General Snus products sold over the counter (OTC) in US retail stores.
  • This application apparently sat in an FDA inbox collecting dust until August of 2014 when FDA "officially" logged it into the system.
  • Per the statute, the clock was now ticking giving FDA one year to reach a decision.
  • Two and a half years later after two 30 day public comment periods, a TPSAC hearing, a 120,000+ page application, an additional 1000 pages asked for by FDA, and a year's worth of "no comment" from the CTP Press Office, The General Snus MRTPA was partially denied outright while the can was kicked down the road by FDA on the remainder....if Swedish Match was willing to invest another 2 years of time and money into the process.

The Swedish Match MRTPA centered around the four warning labels required on all smokeless tobacco cans including the eight General Snus products sold over the counter in the US.

The warning labels in question are:

WARNING:  This product is not a safe alternative to cigarettes.  Swedish Match wanted to revise this label for General Snus to read:  “No tobacco product is safe, but this product presents substantially lower risks to health than cigarettes.”

WARNING:  This product can cause gum disease and tooth loss.  Swedish Match wanted FDA to remove this label requirement for General Snus.

WARNING:  This product can cause mouth cancer.  Swedish Match wanted FDA to remove this label requirement for General Snus.

WARNING:  Smokeless tobacco is addictive.  Of course it is.  Any product containing nicotine is addictive.  Nicotine ranks with heroin when it comes to addiction.  If you're not already a nicotine addict, then you should stay away from any product containing nicotine including Swedish snus. Swedish Match didn't ask for any change to this warning label for General Snus.

FDA Denial Contradicts its own Premarket Authorization of General Snus

Thanks to the Tobacco Control Act, all tobacco products sold in US stores after February 15, 2007 requires premarket review and an order from FDA
authorizing the marketing of the product.  This includes any change to product recipe, content, flavoring, nicotine level among other things.

On Nov 3rd 2015, after only a short 8-month review, FDA approved the sale of the eight General Snus products being sold in US stores.  The PreMarket Tobacco Application (PMTA) approval was 67 pages long.  Here's a link to the General Snus PMTA if you care to read all of it.

It is important to recognize that a PMTA differs from an MRTPA in that the first concludes the product is not more harmful than other comparable products already on the market; an MRPTA states that a product(s) is less harmful than existing products.

Regardless, it is directly relevant to FDA's denial of the General Snus MRTPA to understand why they approved the PMTA in the first place.  The following is from page 6 of the PMTA executive summary.  I've bolded certain items as very significant and injected in red where I feel a comment is necessary.

On March 11, 2015, Swedish Match North America (SMNA) submitted eight General brand snus premarket tobacco product applications (PMTAs)
to FDA seeking authorization under Section 910(b) of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act).

Scientific review of these eight applications demonstrates that these eight products have the following qualities:

Produced with a voluntary, proprietary standard using acceptable manufacturing processes as confirmed by both application review and on-site inspections.

The applicant’s heat treatment process distinguishes Swedish snus from other types of smokeless tobacco (ST), including snus-like products sold in the US market.  i.e steam pasteurization.

The proprietary quality standard for Swedish snus products was developed to ensure product quality. The principal components of this standard include constituent standards, manufacturing standards, manufacturing process requirements, and consumer package labeling with a “best before”
date.

The constituent standards set maximum levels that must not be exceeded for selected constituents in the finished products.

The proposed products contain significantly lower levels of NNN and NNK compared to over 97% the ST products currently on US market.
Since NNN and NNK are among the most carcinogenic constituents in tobacco products, reduction of NNN and NNK levels in ST products could reduce the cancer risk for consumers using ST products.

Assuming persons who would have used other US ST products use these product instead, an individual using these products with reduced
NNN levels could decrease the excess cancer risk by 90% compared to use of moist snuff (market share: 82%), 67% compared to use of chewing tobacco (market share: 15%), 38% compared to use of United States (US)-style snus, and 92% compared to use of dry snuff. Even further reductions in excess cancer risk could occur with the corresponding reductions in NNK; however, a quantitative contribution cannot be determined at this time due to the absence of a NNK cancer slope factor. NOTE:  on Apr 11 2016, six months after the PMTA was approved, Sweden issued new even tougher Food Product Regulations for Undesirable Substances (including NNK) in Swedish Snus.  Thus, the excess cancer risk will be even lower than percentages quoted above.

Levels of other harmful and potentially harmful constituents (HPHC)(including As, Cd, acetaldehyde, crotonaldehyde, formaldehyde, and
BaP) are similar to or lower than levels of ST products currently on the US market. Certain HPHCs (such as acrolein, acetaldehyde, cadmium, and nickel) have been identified as constituents of more toxic concern in the smoke of combusted products as compared to smokeless products.

When used as exclusively instead of other smokeless tobacco products or cigarettes on the US market, these products offer potential for reductions in oral cancer risk. NOTE:  Since 1971 when Swedish Snus became regulated as a food product, there are NO reported instances of oral cancer caused by Swedish Snus

When used as exclusively instead of combusted tobacco products, these products offer lower risk of developing respiratory diseases (i.e., chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, chronic bronchitis) and cancers (such as oral, esophageal, and lung) than smokers.  Since 1971, there are NO reported instances of cancers (oral, esophageal and lung).  Since snus is not burned when used, it of course wouldn't cause smoking-related diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, chronic bronchitis.  Unless you sucked a huge number of snus pouches directly into your lungs, snus use has never been reported as a causal factor in lung cancer.

If nonusers were to initiate or users decrease cessation, there would be negative health consequences. Use of Swedish snus products is not risk-free and its use is associated with adverse health risks such adverse pregnancy outcomes, oral disease, increased risk of fatal cardiovascular events, pancreatic cancer, diabetes, and all-cause mortality.  VERY, VERY rarely associated beyond risk factors for nicotine or caffeine.  The risk of pancreatic cancer is half that of cigarettes which is already very small.  As to "all-cause mortality", I suppose if you dropped your snus can while driving and crashed into a tree trying to retrieve it would count...but it's more likely with a pack of cigarettes since a portion of snus lasts so much longer than a cigarette.

It is anticipated that the marketing of the proposed products, as described in the PMTAs, there is a low likelihood of nonuser uptake of these products, decreased or delayed cessation, or other significant shifts in user demographics. Information from national tobacco use studies and other studies submitted by the applicant indicate that migration of smokers to exclusive use of these proposed snus tobacco products while possible is expected to be limited. It is more likely that uptake of the proposed products occurs among current smokeless tobacco users.  NOTE:  this is more a supposition than fact.  It's largely based on overall lack of knowledge Americans have about Swedish snus.  Snus is not an American cultural norm like cigarettes and other smokeless tobacco products.  Lack of cigarette to snus conversion can also be caused by inaccurate warning labels General Snus cans are forced to display; hense the reason for the Modified Risk Tobacco Product Application by Swedish Match in the first place.

Given the above listed justifications based on information gathered from nonclinical and clinical product evaluations as well as substantial epidemiological studies, the totality of evidence provided in the applications support authorization of these products so that current ST product users will have additional options for less toxic tobacco products, thereby potentially decreasing the negative health impact from tobacco product use making the marketing of these proposed products appropriate for the protection of public health.

Lessons learned so far on General Snus from FDA

Cigarettes are the most dangerous form of tobacco product currently in use today.  Smokeless tobacco, either US smokeless or Swedish snus, contains less harm potential than cigarettes, if only by virtue of the fact toxic tobacco smoke is not inhaled into the lungs.

FDA states in the PMTA that General Snus reduces cancer risks over other smokeless tobacco products by up to a whopping 92%. Even users of Camel or other US made snus can lower their total cancer risk by 38% by switching to General Snus!!  FDA also recognizes Swedish Match's superior manufacturing and quality control processes versus other smokeless tobacco manufacturers.

General Snus contains significantly lower levels of NNN and NNK, the most carcinogenic substances in tobacco products, compared to 97% of all smokeless tobacco (I assume the other 3% wouldn't send FDA free samples to test?) and lit cigarettes contain significantly more NNN and NNK than any smokeless tobacco.

When compared to both cigarettes and other smokeless tobacco products, exclusive use of General Snus offers a lower risk (in practice, virtually none) to tobacco users.

FDA doesn't think smokers will switch to snus; the more likely target is current smokeless tobacco users.  This opinion ignores the 2.5MM ex-smokers who now use snus and the explosion (and subsequent destruction by FDA) of the vapor industry for nicotine-addicted smokers looking for less harmful alternatives.

Meanwhile, nicotine gum in lots of tasty kid-friendly flavors are sitting openly on store shelves and the long-standing Black Box warning label FDA added to the drug Chantix indicating Chantix caused depression and suicide in patients using it to stop smoking who never exhibited such behavior before....vanished.

Oh, depression and suicide are still listed as possible side effects on TV commercials but the Black Box label warning doctors of real risks was removed after a study by the manufacturer and aided by FDA was conducted.  Not only was the action very unusual but there are indication the study was tainted.  This is not a problem for FDA if Big Pharma is involved, apparently.

Why did the General Snus MRTP fail?

Why indeed?  According to those at Swedish Match putting together the General Snus MRTP, FDA seemed very cooperative and helpful.  FDA even gave them pointers on what items to include in the MRTPA.  Communication was open and (thought Swedish Match) very positive throughout the process....right up until the day they received the denial from FDA.

I read a redacted version of the FDA MRTP denial order on General Snus.  Even redacted, it's 115 pages long and plays every linguistic trick, twist of logic, contradiction, and declaring statements "fact" which were in fact, not fact at all.

FDA dissected every single word of each Swedish Match request and used heroic of levels of semantics to justify a denial of two of the proposed warning label changes. Be aware that when FDA states "the population as a whole", they are talking about every single person in the United States regardless of whether they were tobacco users or not; whether they were new-born babies or peaple over 100 years of age.

WARNING:  This product can cause gum disease and tooth loss

After conducting a thorough assessment of the scientific substantiation for the claim that the eight General Snus products cannot cause gum disease or tooth loss, FDA determined that the claim is not substantiated. On the contrary, there is little biologically plausible reason to expect that outcomes related specifically to gum and teeth of users resulting from the use of the eight products would differ from those outcomes resulting from the use of other smokeless tobacco products.  Little biological plausiblity that the outcome would differ from other (already established by FDA to be far more dangerous than Swedish Snus) smokeless tobacco products?  Of course there would be a difference by the virtue of how General Snus manufacturing differs from all the other smokeless tobaccos in question, by the Swedish Food Agency's strict regulation of harmful substance levels allowed in Swedish snus, and all the other reasons the FDA PMTA of November 2015 clearly spelled out.

Indeed, given that these eight General snus products, like other smokeless tobacco products, cause delayed soft tissue wound healing, these products would not be expected to differ from other smokeless tobacco products with respect to these disease outcomes. Furthermore, the epidemiological evidence indicates that the use of these products, as actually used by consumers in Sweden and Norway, increases the risks of certain outcomes classified as gum disease or tooth loss, or precursors to gum disease and tooth loss.   Here we go yet again.  Did the epidemiological evidence take into account the difference in diet and lack of flouride in the water and most tooth pastes in Scandinavia?  The supposition, and it's no more than that, that General Snus allegedly causes delayed soft tissue wound healing means use of General Snus brings all the potential disease outcomes of EVERY other type of smokeless tobacco on the market in the US?

FDA is saying that if ANY type of smokeless tobacco can cause tooth loss or gum disease, then the same MUST be true of General Snus.  Remember, this is the same General Snus touted as DECREASING the risk of cancer by up to 92% compared to other smokeless tobacco products!

Because the totality of the scientific evidence supports the statement that smokeless tobacco products in general and these products in particular "can cause gum disease and tooth loss," the proposed modified risk claim is not substantiated.   The totality of the scientific evidence does NOT support that General Snus IN PARTICULAR can cause gum disease and tooth loss.  Again, Swedish Match is being asked to prove a negative; that General Snus is incapable of ever, ever causing gum disease and tooth loss under any circumstances...including presumably if someone hit you in the mouth with a roll of snus hard enough to knock a tooth out.

Additionally, SMNA did not provide evidence regarding how the modified risk information (i.e., the removal of the gum disease and tooth loss warning) would impact consumer behavior or whether consumers would understand the modified risk information in the context of total health.  FDA is saying that Swedish Match can't prove the LACK of a warning label would change consumer behavior.  The lack of this warning label certainly didn't hurt sales of vapor and e-cigarettes...before FDA destroyed that market except for Big American Tobacco. We also DO know that an inaccurate warning label can change consumer behavior:  in this case they will continue using more dangerous tobacco products including cigarettes without giving General Snus a chance.  Why not, since the inaccurate can labels in effect state that snus will cause your gums to rot and teeth to fall out.

As a result, SMNA has not demonstrated that, as actually used by consumers, the products sold or distributed with the proposed modified risk information, will significantly reduce harm and the risk of tobacco-related disease to individual tobacco users and benefit the health of the population as a whole.  Accordingly, the request to omit the warning related to gum disease and tooth loss should be denied.  Since General Snus contains the inaccurate warning labels, how can Swedish Match demonstrate that by removing them, there WILL be a significant reduction in harm and the risk of tobacco-related disease to individual tobacco users and benefit the health of the population as a whole if they are NOT allowed to remove them and measure the outcome?

IMPORTANT:  If FDA did approve any/all of the label changes for General Snus, they have the power to force Swedish Match to revert back to the old labels if upon review, FDA don't feel the amended labels worked in practice.  Instead, FDA is just assuming they won't which then leaves no opportunity to benefit tobacco users and the health of the population as a whole.

WARNING: This product can cause mouth cancer:

SMNA requests to omit from the label and advertising of the eight General Snus products "WARNING: This product can cause mouth cancer." This warning is currently required for smokeless tobacco products generally. Omission of this warning from a subset of smokeless tobacco products indicates that unlike other smokeless tobacco products, the eight General snus products cannot cause mouth cancer.  Here we go again.  FDA cannot prove that General Snus can cause mouth cancer.  That is just their hypothesis.  But because Swedish Match can not absolutely prove with 100% certainly despite the last 45+ years of data that General Snus WILL NEVER cause mouth cancer in anyone on the planet ever....well you can see what's coming.

Thus, the request is to market the products with an implied modified risk claim that the products, as compared to other smokeless tobacco products, cannot cause mouth cancer.  FDA continues to limit their focus on smokeless tobacco, now calling General Snus a "subset" of smokeless tobacco.  Their preconceived notion which is contradicted by the 1 million Swedish smokers who now snus exclusively that American cigarette smokers would never use General Snus to replace cigarettes is flawed.  With cigarette restrictions so tight in the US, why would a nicotine-addicted smoker be interested in a product which hides discreetly under the gum and involves no spitting?  BECAUSE General Snus, like FDA's beloved Big Pharma nicotine gum, is discreet, can be used anywhere, doesn't require a spit cup, and will satisfy their nicotine cravings.  The only difference is after a year, 92% of nicotine gum users returned to smoking.

After conducting a thorough assessment of the scientific substantiation for the claim that the eight General Snus products cannot cause mouth cancer, FDA determined that the claim is not substantiated. Although the eight General snus products contain significantly lower levels of harmful carcinogens than other smokeless tobacco products currently in the U.S. market, the products contain nitrosamines, including nitrosonornicotine (NNN) and 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) , which have been demonstrated to cause cancer, including cancers of the mouth. NNN, in particular, has been found to be a potent oral carcinogen, and since, according to the available toxicological evidence, there is no established threshold level for NNN carcinogenicity, the products pose an increased risk of mouth cancer compared to non-use.  Now FDA is stating because they don't know what a safe level of nitrosamines is in humans, then General Snus must be exceeding an unknown standard. How does Swedish Match prove General Snus meets or beats a standard FDA claims doesn't even exist?

Do you know what other products contain nitrosamines?  Eggplant, green peppers, French roast coffee, and any barbecued meat like hotdogs, hamburgers, and steak (just to name a few).  If FDA states there is currently NO safe threshold level for NNN and NNK, Why hasn't the FDA food department mandated big black cancer warning labels on these foods?  I'm afraid of Eggplant Parmesan giving me mouth cancer now.  I loved good Eggplant Parmesan.....

In addition, although many of the epidemiological studies of Swedish snus may not have been statistically powered to detect moderate increases in oral cancer risk, the most recent published epidemiological study found a statistically significant increased risk (Roosaar et al., 2008). Accordingly, because the totality of the scientific evidence supports the statement that smokeless tobacco products in general and these products in particular "can cause mouth cancer," the proposed modified risk claim is not substantiated.  Of all the epidemiological studies FDA evaluated concerning the General Snus MRTPA, ONLY ONE, Roosaar et al., 2008, found a "statistically significant" increased risk.  Despite the questionable integrity of this single study (and the definition of "statistically significant"), FDA disregarded all the other reputable scientific studies and research in their possession as well as every Swedish study, opting for "if one study out of countless others raises a red flag, that translates to "the totality of the scientific evidence."

Additionally, SMNA did not provide evidence regarding how the modified risk information (i.e., the removal of the mouth cancer warning) would impact consumer behavior or whether consumers would understand the modified risk information in the context of total health.  Seriously?  While the current warning label would affect consumer behavior by scaring nicotine addicts away, how can Swedish Match prove a negative:  that the lack of a mouth cancer warning label would impact consumer behavior?  As to understanding the modified (Not "NO") risk in the context of total health, that is primarily the job of FDA to educate the public.

As a result, in their present form, the applications do not contain sufficient evidence to demonstrate that, as actually used by consumers, the products sold or distributed with the proposed modified risk information, will significantly reduce harm and the risk of tobacco-related disease to individual tobacco users and benefit the health of the population as a whole. Accordingly, modified risk orders should not be issued for these products based on the proposed claim in its current form.  Again, FDA reiterates their ill-informed decision that "as actually used by consumers" excludes nicotine-addicted cigarette smokers.  Include smokers and second-hand smoke, General Snus would benefit the population as a whole.  Even if you limit the potential users to other smokeless tobacco products, FDA's own cancer numbers would signify significantly reduced harm and risk of tobacco-related disease to individual (smokeless) tobacco users.

However, the applications could be amended in several ways, for example by changing the proposed claims, supplementing the evidence, and conducting new studies, which could provide sufficient evidence to support issuance of modified risk orders relating to mouth cancer for these tobacco products.  Translation:  We know our argument is pretty weak here.  If Swedish Match wants to spend the enormous about of time and money to try again, it MAY be enough to change our minds in a couple of years.....or we could just say they didn't prove a negative again and have wasted everyone's time and money.

WARNING: This product is not a safe alternative to cigarettes

The rationale used by FDA for keeping this warning label instead of approving the Swedish Match alternative is particularly infuriating and indefensible.

SMNA requests to revise the currently required "WARNING: This product is not a safe alternative to cigarettes" on the label and advertising of the eight General Snus products, by replacing it with an express modified risk claim "WARNING: No tobacco product is safe, but this product presents substantially lower risks to health than cigarettes."

Our review concluded that the claim that the eight General snus products present substantially lower risks to health may be substantiated, but only in part. That is, there is evidence to support that the eight General snus products, as actually used by consumers in Sweden and Norway, as compared to smoking cigarettes may substantially reduce the risks of some, but not all, tobacco-related diseases to individual tobacco users.

The scientific evidence is insufficient to support that substantial reductions would be observed across the full range of risks posed by tobacco products, as implied by a generalized statement about health risks as compared to smoking (i.e., "substantially lower risks than cigarettes"). The proposed new label doesn't state an absolute.  This is a Modified Risk application.  The new label states quite clearly that "No tobacco product is safe".  BUT General Snus presents substantially lower risks to health than cigarettes.

In the broad sense, ANY smokeless tobacco product is potentially less harmful to smoking cigarettes but General Snus in particular has demonstrated and FDA even acknowledges that the "product has substantially lower risks to health than cigarettes."  Swedish Match does NOT state or imply that General Snus is "safe" or without risk.

They is factually stating that the health risks are substantially lower compared to the health risks inherent in cigarettes.  A nicotine-addicted consumer would read this as General Snus is less harmful than cigarettes but still has a level of risk (of which FDA doesn't define).

If "WARNING: No tobacco product is safe, but this product presents substantially lower risks to health than cigarettes"  isn't a clear and accurate representation of a Modified Risk Tobacco Product, then what is?  How does this statement not fit the definition of what Congress had in mind when they wrote the MRTP classification into the Tobacco Act?

FDA REALLY has to dance in denying this request...and does.

The evidence is also insufficient that U.S. consumers would use the products in the same manner as consumers in Sweden and Norway (e.g., frequency or
intensity of usage; exclusive snus use versus dual use with cigarettes); therefore, we cannot conclude that, as actually used by U.S. consumers, the products would substantially reduce the risks to smokers.  In the US Government and Anti-Cigarette group campaign material is the statement "every cigarette takes 5 minutes off a smoker's life"  If a smoker cuts his cigarette use only in half by using snus (most dual users cut down smoking by a much larger percentage), that's 5 minutes of life gained for every cigarette not smoked, how is that not substantially reducing the risks to smokers?

How can FDA possibly know that given time, US consumers would indeed use the products in the same manner in Sweden and Norway....especially with the vapor market now virtually restricted to the inferior Big Tobacco e-cigarette monopoly?  Most importantly, how can Swedish Match possibly prove FDA's assumptions to be false unless their MRTPA had been approved?

In addition, FDA assessed the potential benefits and harms to the health of the population and concluded that the evidence is insufficient to determine that the products will benefit the population as a whole, taking into account, for example, smokers who switch completely to the General snus products, non-users who initiate use, and dual use by current tobacco users. What happened to the horror of Second Hand Smoke?  EVERY cigarette not smoked because of General Snus means less second hand smoke affecting the population as a whole.  That's just the most obvious reason; I could go on with many more as could current snus users in the US.  Against FDA's apparent pre-determined decision, it seems a futile effort.

Furthermore, the scientific evidence is not sufficient to conclude that the modified risk information would be comprehended by the public in the context of total health and in relation to all tobacco-related diseases, particularly in the context of a warning. What a low opinion FDA has of the intelligence of the average American!  How can one read "WARNING: No tobacco product is safe, but this product presents substantially lower risks to health than cigarettes" and NOT understand it?

They may have more questions but that's a good thing.  Since Swedish Snus is not a cultural norm in the US, education is the most important factor in ensuring that General Snus "as actually used by consumers" becomes a very visible and important method in lowering the risk of tobacco-related disease in both the nicotine-addicted users but the population as a whole.  Let's not forget the 2.5MM current US users of Swedish Snus either.

Accordingly, modified risk orders should not be issued for these products based on the proposed claim in its current form. However, the applications could be amended in several ways, for example by changing the proposed claims, supplementing the evidence, and conducting new studies, which could provide sufficient evidence to support issuance of modified risk orders relating to health risks compared to cigarettes for these tobacco products.

Again, FDA knows this is their weakest argument so far and is giving Swedish Match a chance to roll the dice again if they're willing to put up the time and money to make the bet.

Considering everything I've discussed about this particular warning label and how it clearly fits with the legislative definition of "modified risk", how is it possible to make this warning label any more appropriate, yet keep the modified risk message?  FDA has set a bar so high that if this label change wasn't approved, what change possibly could?

Is the current FDA and their MRTP process just a sham by anti-all-tobacco extremists?

FDA's final decision on the SMNA General Snus MRTPA was a shock to Swedish Match, to me, and to the vast majority of reduced harm tobacco advocates who condemned it loudly and often.

Based on the ease in which the General Snus PMTA was approved and the positive language by FDA, it seemed under Mitch Zeller, the Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) had finally gotten their act together.

Swedish Match NA, prior to the decision, had nothing but nice things to say about what they considered a collaboration with FDA on getting the MRTPA on the right glide path to success.

Perhaps in hindsight, the Deeming Regulations on Vapor and e-cigarettes released prior to the MRTPA decision should have given everyone pause.

The question of why FDA issued such a negative and intellectually weak decision could be explained by a number of factors and/or a combination of factors.

The FDA employees who volunteered to work at CTP when it was formed didn't do so because they liked to smoke a good cigar at dinner.  They were by and large anti-all-tobacco, some to the point of being extremists.

This would certainly help explain why the bar for receiving MRTP status was set so impossibly high the chances of a positive decision were virtually impossible.

Since the Swedish Match application was the first to complete the process also may have worried them about the precedent they were setting.  The progressive political climate made marijuana legalization acceptable but the probable backlash from granting the General Snus MRTPA made them consider their personal interests and careers over those of the public health.

It may also be that the definition of "modified risk tobacco product" was never clearly defined by FDA to itself.  Obviously in this case, the changes they would allow to General Snus warning labels were not codified beforehand or communicated properly to Swedish Match.  Essentially, CTP had no idea what they were looking for, hoping to stumble upon it along this 2.5 year journey to nowhere.

I'm certain that if smokeless tobacco had originally been required to carry the cigarette warning "This product causes lung cancer" and Swedish Match had requested that label be removed from General Snus, FDA would have danced through hoops to justify denying that request too even though snus is not inhaled.

Or maybe FDA had already decided at the beginning no MRTP request would ever be approved and this was all for show.

Fortunately, we have a good indicator of what FDA's true stance is on MRTP.  Philip Morris International (PMI) is joining the "heat, not burn" cigarette product market with iQOS.   Unlike Reynolds with their Eclipse "heat, not burn" cigarette, PMI believes iQOS (which stands for 'I Quit Ordinary Smoking') to be so superior to conventional cigarettes that they submitted an MRTPA for it.

Rumored to be between 2-3 million pages long, PMI is attempting to justify a clearly more harmful alternative to Swedish snus, both to the user and public at large.

I'll be following the progress of the iQOS MRTP with interest.  If it is resolved quicker and/or with a positive decision by FDA, it is clear as with vapor, only Big Tobacco need apply.

I doubt Swedish Match will wait for the outcome of PMI's MRTPA in deciding whether or not to resubmit a modified General Snus MRTPA.  They have 45 days to signal their intentions to FDA and a 2 year period to resubmit.

At a minimum, I'm sure Swedish Match will want to discuss in detail with FDA where they feel General Snus application needs updating.  They will also ask FDA to clarify in no uncertain terms what FDA considers a modified risk tobacco product to be.

Based on those discussions, Swedish Match will go back to the drawing board and decide if the time, effort, and money in revising the General Snus MRTPA is worth it or whether they would just be throwing good money after bad with no plausible change in outcome.

In the meantime, untold thousands of nicotine-addicted smokers will sicken and die before their time unnecessarily.  As to the rest of the general public, they will be footing the bill through higher health insurance premiums to cover the healthcare costs of sickening smokers.

From what I've been able to piece together about iQOS, if FDA does give them MRTP status, the same will be true.  Reynolds was honest with Eclipse.  They never said it was less harmful that regular cigarettes; to the contrary, Eclipse smoke was higher in carbon monoxide than conventional cigarettes.

What RJRT did say at the time was that Eclipse smelled like burning paper, not cigarettes, meaning you would not reek of cigarette smoke....it was more discreet.

Not having discovered Swedish snus yet, that's why I switched from Camel Lights to Eclipse.  Sure, the taste was terrible but it delivered nicotine.  Once you learned to tolerate the taste, people would not realize you were a smoker unless they saw you in the act.

I am eternally grateful that a year later in 2007, I first heard about snus and that a knowledgeable tobacco store owner overcame my distrust of smokeless tobacco with a can of General Original Portion Snus.  I haven't looked back since...but I wish FDA would.

Real Swedish snus, especially products made to Swedish Match GothiaTek standards, will have a positive impact on the American public: nicotine-addicted and nicotine-free alike.

Keep snusing after the apocalypse

Offroad Los Kit1

The SnusCENTRAL.org Bunker, located at an undisclosed location in Texas, USA, receive a shipment of the new Offroad End-of-the-World Snus Survival Kits.

Each kit contains two tubs of Offroad loose snus; one classic flavored and the other lakrits (licorice).  Additionally, four vials of flavoring were included so you can tailor your snus to your own taste.  Included in our kit were vials of Vanilla, Juniper, Cola, and Bergamott.

We were surprised that the shipping boxes were not lead-shielded against radiation but are guessing that would the added weight would have made the shipping charges ridiculous.

Each Offroad snus tub contains enough snus to make 750 one gram prillas for a total of 1500 grams of snus per kit.

The tubs we received had a full year before expiration.  Add another year if you have the electricity or ability after world destruction to freeze them and you'll have a full two years worth of fresh snus....assuming you're not dead yet.  This is the perfect solution for survival communities with enough snusers to finish the tubs off while still fresh.

Swedish Match acquires Danish snus manufacturer V2 Tobacco!

In a surprise announcement this morning, V2 Tobacco announced they had been aquired by Swedish Match AB.  V2 Tobacco is a privately held smokeless tobacco company, primarily active in Europe. V2 Tobacco is headquartered in Silkeborg, Denmark.

To snus users around the world, V2 is most famous for their Thunder Snus line of high nicotine snuses.

Thunder Snus released the first of the extra strong nicotine snuses back in 2009.  Today, almost every brand of snus is represented and the Extra Strong Snus category is the best selling group across Norway, the USA, and through internet snus shops.

Author Larry Waters with Patrick Vogel in Denmark for the 2011 new V2 factory celebrationIn hindsight, the sale of V2 is a little less shocking although Swedish Match being the purchaser is.  V2 Co-Founder Patrick Vogel stepped away from the business a year ago to concentrate on a new venture.

Swedish Match being the purchaser is a shock, though.  SwM and V2 have had a contentious relationship over the last 10 years resulting in multiple lawsuits and a very public media battle.

One reason for the purchase may be V2's chew bag position in Europe where the EU still clings to their outdated ban on Swedish Snus.  Swedish Match has had limited success in this area.

V2's Snus Factory in Denmark is also second only to Swedish Match when it comes to state-of-the-art production facilities.  V2 has been following Swedish Match's GothiaTek production standards for years.

Reasons listed for the acquistion include:

  • Solid growth in the modern chewing tobacco segment, with chew bags
  • Active and growing in many markets, notably in Denmark, Germany as well as on-line, with a small but dynamic presence in Scandinavian markets outside of Denmark
  • Main brands include Thunder, Offroad, and Phantom (chew bags and snus)
  • Production in Silkeborg, Denmark (meaning outside of Sweden)
  • Annual turnover in the range of 160 MSEK, and approximately 60 employees (FTE)
  • V2 Tobacco is a Danish company, founded in 2006 with modern and flexible production facilities in Silkeborg, Denmark. The yearly production volumes include close to 20 million cans of chew bags and snus combined.

Marc and Patrick Vogel at the beginning of V2 Tobacco 11 years agoV2 Tobacco’s portfolio consists of brands including Thunder, Offroad, and Phantom. The company is active in more than 25 markets, with the main markets being Denmark, Sweden and Norway, Germany, Switzerland, on-line, and a small but growing presence in certain other European markets.

In this transaction, Swedish Match will acquire 100 percent of the shares in V2 Tobacco (production and sales/marketing in Denmark). The current CEO and one of the founders of the company, Marc Vogel, has agreed to remain with the Company, which will be operated for the most part independently from other Swedish Match businesses.

The closing date of the transaction was August 31st.  Swedish Match wasted no time making this clear:  if you go to the V2 website today, the V2 logo still comes up in the tab but instead of V2, it now says Swedish Match.

We are very excited about this transaction,” said Lars Dahlgren, President and CEO of Swedish Match. “A vibrant and independent V2 Tobacco business fits very well as a complement to our existing organization. V2 Tobacco´s modern and adaptable production allows Swedish Match improved flexibility and expanded opportunities to adapt to changing consumer desires, helping Swedish Match to move further toward its vision of a world without cigarettes.

”It has been of importance to us to find a buyer who shares our values and ambitions for the future. With their long history, competence and their extensive work with product quality, Swedish Match will give our operation in Silkeborg new and better opportunities to develop and grow, says Marc Vogel.”

Patrick Vogel added "It is very good thing for the future of the company and its employees. Silkeborg will be the base for all countries except Norway and Sweden."

Details of the purchase price have not been disclosed although it has been described as an offer one could not say no to.

Congratulations to Swedish Match for a completely unexpected but brilliant business decision in today's volitile snus market...and of course to Marc and Patrick Vogel on turning their snus dream into gold.

General Loose (lös) Snus doesn't make the cut in US stores

Based on consumer demand, Swedish Match North America (SMNA) has pulled the loose cut version of General Snus from its 20,000 US retail locations catalog.  About 98% of all General Snus sold over the counter (OTC) in US convenience and tobacco stores is of the portion snus variety.

General Classic Loose 2017 Breaking down General Snus sales in US stores, 50% is General Large Mint snus, 20% is General White Portion snus, 13% is General Original Portion snus (my personal favorite), while the remaining 17% consists of sales of General Wintergreen White Portion and General Mini Mint Dry Portion snus.

General Mini Mint seems to be a starter snus with customers moving up to General Large Mint when they repurchase.  About 5000 General Snus retailers stock General Mini Mint on a consistant basis.

US OTC sales of General Snus continue to grow by double digits year to year.  Only six General Snus products were grand-fathered in under the Tobacco Control Act of 2009 by FDA for OTC Sale in the US.

The complete General Snus catalog currently has over 40 different products available via eStores.  The entire Swedish Match Snus brand catalog has over 100 offerings today.  The vast majority of these products are available to US consumers through internet Snus Shops located in Sweden like the legendary SnusCentral.com Snus Shop.

US distribution of mystery product ZYN nt Tobacco-free Nicotine Pouches expands

$

US Cities Banning Wintergreen and Mint Smokeless Tobacco AND Snus

$

The calls for banning flavored nicotine-containing products has been primarily a long and vocal one when it comes to vapor and e-cigarettes.  Poking out of the eSmoke debate is a new threat that hits my community much closer to home:  a ban on flavored mint and wintergreen snus and smokeless tobacco.

San Francisco, Oakland, St. Paul, and Canton have proposed regulations to effectively slash the availability of all smokeless tobacco products and ban outright wintergreen and mint flavored dip and snus.  Since US sales of these flavors make up 60% of the total US market, this will be a huge blow to national Adult Tobacco Harm Reduction (ATHR) efforts to switch current cigarette smokers to safer nicotine alternatives.

"Medically approved" products like Big Pharma's nicotine gum are of course excluded in these new regulations.  New nicotine pouches and dissolvables which contain no tobacco like Swedish Match's new ZYN product have no such luck and fall under the proposed bans as well.

If you are a tobacco-centric snus or dip user, you're going to have to look a lot harder to find your brand of choice.  Smokeless tobacco sales would be limited to "Adult Only Tobacco Outlets" (traditional tobacco stores).  Convenience stores, supermarkets, and the like will only be allowed to carry....cigarettes.

As usual, these actions are being taken to "save the children", although most of the proposed regulations clearly acknowledge that selling or providing tobacco to minors is already illegal with fines and even jail time attached for those who do so.

As usual, Big Pharma and Big Tobacco will be the ones to profit the most.

The big losers are nicotine-addicted adults; either those still smoking who want to quit or those who have already quit thanks to smokeless products; especially Swedish snus.  Swedish snus is already proven to be 99% less harmful to a smoker than cigarettes.

The Dirty Secret: tobacco doesn't kill children

Irresponsible Parent IssueUnless a child lights themselves on fire in the process of lighting a cigarette, cigarettes don't kill children.  The deadly effects of cigarette smoking such as lung cancer and heart disease take years to develop.  I'm not aware of any minor who died of cigarette or tobacco-related illnesses before they were old enough to vote.

Illegal cigarette or tobacco use by minors can result in nicotine addiction.  Once addicted, these individuals will be subject to all the negative outcomes especially cigarette smoking can bring later in life.

Nicotine addicted adults are the biggest health concern we are facing, especially that of smokers.  This is the group most at risk and for whom the availability of safer and effective nicotine alternatives is the absolute priority; or at least it should be.  Banning any flavor, delivery system/device, or restricting the availability of Adult THR products is counter-intuitive, agenda and ideologically driven, hateful, and ultimately deadly to the group at the greatest risk:  adult nicotine addicts.

Big Pharma Adult Tobacco Harm Reduction Products really aren't

All these proposals carve out exemptions for "medically proven" or "doctor prescribed" smoking cessation methods.  While these are expensive and very profitable to the pharmaceutical industry, they are the least effect options available to help nicotine addicted smokers to quit long-term.

I come in lots of great flavors!Nicotine gum has a one year success rate in stopping smoking of 8%.  In other words, 92% of nicotine gum users go back to smoking after one year.... that's a 92% failure rate.  Yet those huge displays of brand name and generic nicotine gum, in a plethora of fruit and candy flavors, sit proudly on the shelves of Walmart in easy reach of children.  Each box sells for about $50/box, depending on your market.  Nicotine addicts buy them by the truckload, often at the advice of their doctors.

Fifty or 60 years ago, 4 out of 5 doctors were recommending different brands of cigarettes "for the taste".  Look where that got those patients.

Big Pharma also has pills to stop smoking.  Of course they do.  Pills mean "medicine".  Pills are serious.  Smoking cessation pills can also be dangerous.

Pfizer markets Chantix in the US and Champix internationally.  Both are designed to take away the urge to smoke.  If you've ever seen a commercial (yes, these are advertised on TV) for Chantix, don't tune out the huge list of possible side affects Pfizer is grudgingly required to list at the end of the commercial.

There was a big uproar about two of these side affects a few years ago.  The first was "this product may cause depression in people who were not previously diagnosed with a depressive disorder".  The second was "this product may cause suicide in people who where not suicidal before taking the medication.

Doctors were found to be prescribing anti-depressants along with Chantix as a matter of course. In Australia, about a dozen suicides were attributed to the use of Champix by patents attempting to quit smoking.  Lawsuits were filed by the mourning families.  I assume Pfizer settled them all out of court as I can't find a reference to an actual judgement against them.  But that's why Big Pharma has lots of lawyers on staff and ample settlement funds set aside.

FDA forced Pfizer to slap what is called a "Black Box" warning on Chantix boxes and materials.  Black Box warnings are reserved for products which are FDA approved but must be prescribed with extreme caution and additional monitoring of the patients by the doctor.

A year or so ago Pfizer submitted a study they had prepared to FDA stating Chantix didn't cause meaningful depression or suicide.  Based on this one manufacturer conducted study, FDA went ahead and lifted the Black Box warning label requirement on Chantix.  I don't have the current figures, but the effectiveness of Chantix was similar to that of nicotine gum after one year.

Combined, nicotine gum and anti-smoking pills are a multi-billion dollar business today.  Congratulations to the shareholders of the relevant Big Pharma stocks.

Adult Smokeless Tobacco and Swedish Snus users have the Right to Freedom of Choice

It is illegal for children to buy or consume alcohol.  Unlike tobacco, that first bottle of booze behind the wheel of a car can kill the child...and innocent others.

As an adult, I can walk into a liquor store and walk through row upon row of flavored alcoholic beverages of all kinds.  I can buy any I chose legally.  If a less responsible adult decides to buy a bottle of flavored vodka, drive while drunk and kills himself or others, they and they alone are held responsible for their actions...and this is how it should be.

Apparently, nicotine addicted adults are not worthy of the same respect.  Apparently, the government from the local to the national doesn't trust nicotine addicted adults to make rational decisions when attempting to stop smoking cigarettes.

Freedom to chose a legal Adult THR product of the flavor they enjoy or from a store they patronize is just too much control to leave to the individual.  One has to question the hypocritical agenda of these anti-THR extremists.

On one hand, they hate cigarettes and the health risks they bring as do we all; especially ex-smokers.  Yet on the other hand, they support the least effective smoking cessation products (in all their yummy flavors) while fighting tooth and nail to keep products proven at a minimum to be substantially less harmful than cigarettes off the market or as difficult as possible to obtain.

In reading the drafts of these anti-smokeless tobacco/anti-snus ordinances, I am outraged and offended by the arrogance and hatred these ignorant, self-anointed gatekeepers of my personal freedom to quit smoking using the most effective products for me.  I am 10 years cigarette-free today because I was able to walk into a store and buy a can of General Snus to try.  Heart disease runs in my family; if these tobacco prohibitionists had their way, I would have been forced to continue smoking and most likely would be dead today.

If I have the freedom to legally buy alcohol as an adult, I have the freedom to choose which adult tobacco harm reduction product works the best for me and that I enjoy the most.

As for "the children" justification.....just stop it.  It doesn't apply to me or any other nicotine-addicted adult.

Use the laws in place or create even more to criminalize and slow the sale of all tobacco products to minors.  That is a totally separate issue.  Leave my Swedish snus alone; mint, wintergreen, or any other flavor I fancy!  My tax dollars pay your salary.

Snus User turns Pro: the Amazing Offroad Brandy Alexander Portion Snus Story

$
0
0

I don't often write snus reviews.  It's not that I can't; it's just that my credo has always been in judging a snus, the mouth of each snus user is the ultimate judge for that person.

I do make exceptions when I snus is particularly offensive, amazingly good, or it has a unique story behind it.  Offroad Snubie Brandy Alexander Portion Snus hits two of those buttons:  it's amazingly good and has a great backstory.

V2 Tobacco first released an Offroad Limited Edition Brandy Alexander Snus back in 2008 with limited success.  They tried again in 2009 under the now defunct Nordströmmen Loose Snus Limited Edition, again to limited success.

I had tasted both of these and could see why they never made it as production snuses.  Someone else tried the 2009 version and fell in love with the flavor.  His name is Chad Jones, aka Snubie, and without him the story would have ended right here.

Chad was new to snus back then but very passionate about it and Brandy Alexanders.  He kept hounding V2 for years, finally making a deal that if he could get the number of Likes on their new Facebook page to over 500, they would try again with Brandy Alexander.  He did and V2 tried again in 2012 with another limited release of Nordströmmen Brandy Alexander Loose Snus.

V2 was getting better with the flavor but not exciting enough snus users to warrant turning this into a mass production product.

They tried again in 2013, this time as an extremely high nicotine Thunder Ultra Strong Brandy Alexander Portion Snus(historical note:  V2 asked me to create a name for snus which was higher in nicotine than Extra Strong for their products.  My response was Ultra Strong which is still used to this day).

Back to 2013, once again Brandy Alexander did not make the cut.  Despite this, Chad never lost his love of the flavor or his determination to see it successfully return.

Offroad Snubie Brandy Alexander Portion Snus:  the Creation

When Chad told me V2 had agreed to let him completely redesign a Brandy Alexander snus, I tried to temper his expectations a little.  I few years earlier, I had designed a coffee flavored snus with V2 for the UNZ Family 1000th Anniversary party.  Patrick Vogel sent me a portable snus lab and I sent them back samples of what I and others still consider to be the finest coffee flavored snus ever made.

Offroad Snubie Brandy Alexander 2017Despite both our best efforts and numerous prototypes, V2 could never recreate anything close to the rich flavor of my samples.  I've always suspected Marc Vogel of sabotaging the project because it was Patrick's idea and I wrote about the massive size of Marc's office at V2 but could never prove he did it.  In the end, the UNZ family name was removed and Thunder Extra Strong Coffee Supreme Portion Snus was released.  After 6 months or so, it faded away as well it should have.

Chad's project with V2 conversely turned out to be a complete success.  He correctly specified a lower moisture content than the 50% of the previous Brandy Alexander products.  In the end, it came out to around 38%.

He kept the nicotine at a regular strength 8% to keep the focus on the flavor and avoid any nicotine bitterness.  The portion size was specified at 0.9 grams to ensure there was enough snus to deliver the flavor profile he wanted but upped the number of portions per can from Offroad's traditional 20 to 22.

V2 also upped the quality of the tobacco and ingredients for Snubie Brandy Alexander, according to Chad.

Presentation also counts.  Chad wanted a white can instead of the traditional Offroad black cans.  The labelling and colors were also very important to him.  In a collaborative effort, the final can graphics took shape.

Now enough background; let’s review the final product!

Offroad Snubie Brandy Alexander Portion Snus:  The Snus Review

I usually use at least half a can of a new snus before I do a review but the case of Snubie Brandy Alexander, I had to finish the entire can before trusting myself to put thoughts to paper.  My expectations had been low but the reality was Offroad Snubie Brandy Alexander was an exceptional snus!

Unlike previous V2 versions of Brandy Alexander, the lower moisture resulted in a gradual release of flavor which kept building; not the flood of flavor I had experienced in the past.

The flavor itself was different.  Instead of being overpowering it was subtle mix of brandy sweetness with hints of chocolate and raspberry.  At times I almost tasted a little cherry as opposed to past versions where the cherry was almost cough syrup like.  I can't emphasize the sweetness aspect enough; it is not overpowering, it is not artificial, it is perfectly balanced to the flavor profile.

The flavor lasted too even as it evolved.  A portion easily remained flavorful for 1.5 hours.

The thing is, Offroad is a value snus brand; Snubie Brandy Alexander is a premium class snus.

When, not if, V2 decides to make this a production product, they may want to rethink the branding.  Premium snus fans already familiar with Offroad may hesitate to try it because of the brand.  Conversely, Offroad Snus fans may find the Snubie Snus so tasty it will unreasonably raise their expectations for the rest of the brand.

However, if this is an example of the premium-yet-value-priced quality the Offroad brand will deliver since V2 Tobacco's acquisition by Swedish Match, Snubie Brandy Alexander would make a great flagship for the 2018 Offroad brand.

Matt Campbell of our SnusTV.com channel is very big on presentation and almost always starts his video reviews off by talking about the can.  The Snubie Brandy Alexander is a can worth talking about.

Chad's insistence on a white can was warranted.  Like the snus, the can is elegant yet subtle.

The top graphic is the most note-worthy.  If you hold the can to the light and gently tilt it, the square graphic on the top changes between being inset, outset, and flat!  Kudos to Michael Anderson for the foil graphic idea.

The can has a full-sized catch lid like the other V2 products now which is welcome.  This is a bar-worthy snus can which is the highest praise I can give it.  Bar-worthy is a phrase I coined years ago to describe a snus can you would intentionally leave on the bar as a conversation starter or to impress.  Lesser cans are best put back in your pocket until needed again.

As for the snus itself, Offroad Snubie Brandy Alexander is officially now a part of my daily snus rotation.  That is the highest possible praise my taste-buds can give.

This is one of the very few snuses I would recommend buying a roll of to try instead of just a can.  It's an outstanding example of what the collaboration between a snus super-user like Chad and an innovative, forward thinking snus manufacturer like V2/Swedish Match can result in.

Offroad Snubie Brandy Alexander Portion Snus is still for sale on pre-release preview at the legendary SnusCentral.com Snus Shop.  It will be available at other snus eStores as of Week 51.

How ever you get it, this is a must-try snus.

Swedish Match to release new snus offerings in US stores!

New Thunder Xtreme in Original Strength and Strong Nicotine

At SnusCon 2018 in Chicago on June 10th, Swedish Match North America (SMNA) unveiled a new snus offering for US brick and mortar shops around September 2018: Thunder Xtreme.  All three are original-style portions; one as at a regular nicotine strength of 0.8% while the other two will be strong nicotine snus products at 1.2% nicotine content.....

The three new products are ThundeThunder Xtreme Portion-Snus 2018 Pre Launch US Packaging with warningsr Xtreme Original Portion, Thunder Xtreme Strong Portion, and Thunder Xtreme Red Strong Portion.  The Thunder Xtreme brand is available for use in the US thanks to the foresight of V2 Tobacco's former owners, Patrick and Marc Vogel.

When the Tobacco Control Act was passed in 2009, V2 registered a number of product names with FDA.  Under the grandfather clause, these names are legal for use today.

This was a huge bonus for Swedish Match when they purchased V2 in September 2017.  It's easy to look back now and say that Swedish Match should have done the same with their eligible product names and brands but those were very confusing times for the tobacco industry.

The Tobacco Control Act was essentially a scaffold for FDA to fill in with regulations.  It's easy to Monday-morning quarterback what could have been done back then but at the time, only a few like the Vogel's had the vision to take some extra steps.

Thus the new Swedish match offerings are under the V2 Thunder Xtreme umbrella.

The can graphics are a unifier with the Swedish Match Snus portfolio.  The large X on the top graphics harkens back to the XRANGE brand sold in Sweden and through internet snus shops.  The 5 dot strength indicator is also one shared across a number of Swedish Match brands only the ranking system for the Thunder Xtreme cans is different.  In Sweden, the two strong version Xtremes would only rank 3 dots at 1.2% nicotine.  The Extra Strong high nicotine snuses would rate 4 stars and the Ultra Strong even higher nicotine snuses would qualify for 5 dots.

When it comes to flavor, both the Xtreme Original and Strong portions remind me of the old Phantom Snus profile V2 produced pre-2010.  The tobacco flavor is up front with a rounded flavor and hints of herbs in the background.  I'm also picking up something with just a whisper of something else unexpected; eucalyptus perhaps?

The Xtreme Red Strong portion is a cranberry/raspberry blend; I recognize the raspberry element from Thunder Ultra Strong Raspberry portion.  Like other Thunder flavored snuses, the taste is good but not as natural as Jakobsson's or the Swedish Match berry flavored snuses.

After the initial burst of berry flavor, the tobacco takes over and the cranberry/raspberry blend retreats very pleasantly to supporting player mode.  All three are well done and especially in the case of the two strong nicotine versions, I expect to be very popular in the US.

In a wise move by Swedish Match, the flavor profiles of the Thunder Xtreme series are very different from the General Snus products sold both in US stores and via internet snus stores; the latter of which carry the full General Snus brand products.

As of today, the plan is to release the Thunder Xtreme products to tobacco stores and cigarette retailers first while General Snus dominates the existing US distribution outlets.  Thunder Xtreme should also be available at select internet snus shops.  And speaking of General Snus......

New Packaging coming to General Snus in the US

General Snus 2018 US RepackagingVisibility among the mass of cigarettes, chewing tobacco, moist snus, and now vapor products has always been a challenge for General Snus.  The lighted cooler General Snus is sold from helps but is, like at my local 7-Eleven, often on the very bottom shelf behind the counter.

Telling what General Snus products are in the chiller, both for the retailer and the customer, can be challenging since the muted cans are almost identical save a small band which identifies the exact product flavor.

Starting around September 1st 2018, this will no longer be an issue.  Behold the future General Snus cans!

Mint is mint-blue; Mini-Mint is in a lighter shade of blue to distiguish it from it's full-sized brother

Wintergreen is, well, green.  What other color would you use?

Original Portion comes in gold while White Portion comes in, of course, white.

Rest assured that while the packaging is changing, the General Snus inside is the same you've grown to love and remains the top selling Swedish snus in the world.

For those of you whom are General Lös (Loose) Snus fans, there is no can or color for General Classic Loose since it will not be reintroduced into the line; at least this year.  General Loose is still available at internet snus shops like the legendary SnusCentral.com Snus Shop and can be shipped anywhere in the world where legal.

Enjoy your REAL Swedish Snus!

CONFIRMED: Swedish Match AB buying Gotlandssnus AB for 300MM SEK

The SnusCENTRAL Intelligence Agency has learned that Swedish snus giant Swedish Match AB (SMAB) has come to an agreement to purchase mid-sized snus manufacturer Gotlandssnus AB for 300MM SEK (approx 40MM USD).  This would follow last September's purchase by SMAB of Danish snus maker V2 Tobacco A/S followed by House of Oliver Twist.

UPDATE:  On July 26 2018, three days after this story was published, Swedish Match AB issued a press release confirming that they had purchased a majority interest in Gotlandssnus AB.  The SnusCIA strikes again!

SMAB Jak V2 graphicGotlandssnus is majority owned by the founding Jakobsson's family.  They have streamlined their brands under the Jakobsson's Snus banner in recent years and specialize in high quality natural fruit, mint, and natural flavored snuses.  Like V2 Tobacco, a number of Jakobsson's Snus products were grandfathered for sale in the United States.

This will add Jakobsson's to Swedish Match's current product portfolio of snus available for over-the-counter sales within the US.  This includes the five General Snus products already in mass distribution in US convenience and tobacco stores as well as three new Thunder Xtreme snuses being added in September 2018.

Also by September, the US General Snus products are getting a packaging makeover to increase visibility on the shelf. The complete Swedish Match snus line including the five General OTC products and Thunder Snus are already available in the US and world-wide (where legal) through internet snus shops.

The combined Swedish Match snus brand portfolio plus the V2 and Gotlandssnus brands will give SMAB the largest and most diverse snus brand portfolio in the world.  These will all play well through the existing Swedish Match Distribution system, especially in the hot markets of Sweden, Norway and Switzerland.

It's likely Jakobsson brand snus will also appear in the US over-the-counter market, probably in tobacco stores at first, like the new Thunder Xtreme US products.

Jakobsson's, like V2 and Swedish Match, also make a number of "chew bag" chewing tobacco products which are sold in the EU and other countries which ban Swedish snus for political reasons but not chewing tobacco, hence the earlier Oliver Twist purchase.

No official comment or confirmation has been made by either Swedish Match or Gotlandssnus at the time this article is published. Later, a representative at Gotlandssnus refused to confirm or deny the purchase but added "where there is smoke, there is fire".

The timing of the Gotlandssnus purchase is imminent, according to multiple sources in Sweden close to the negotiations who asked to remain anonymous as they are not authorized to discuss the acquisition.

Both the V2 Tobacco and Gotlandssnus purchases could be part of Swedish Match's new global strategy of absorbing mid-sized competitors with key product brands to increase their control of the Swedish snus market.  It also could be an effort to boost the value of SMAB in the event Swedish Match itself is acquired.  Rumors of a Big Tobacco purchase of SMAB have been around for years.  Either way, it's a good move for Swedish Match and it's shareholders.

This is an ongoing snus news event and more details will follow as they become available.
